Trends in Education Reform

THE SUCCESSFUL PROLIFERATION of computers in K-12 classrooms across the country is due partially to recent associations between education technology and school reform. For more than a decade now, reformers at the state and local levels have attempted to revolutionize the way schools operate and students learn with a variety of top-to-bottom and bottom-to-top changes in administration, curriculum and outreach. As a result of many of these reforms, technology plays a major role in reducing professional pressures on teachers and increasing the efficiency of student comprehension. This chapter outlines some of the major issues in school reform in the hopes of creating a better understanding of the connection between technology and educational change.
